अथर्ववेद का चिकित्साशास्त्र : एक अध्ययन

जल-चिकित्सा(hydrotherapy)
जल का भी हमारे जीवन में विशेष महत्त्व है। इसके बिना जीवन सम्भव ही नहीं है। जल को जीवन कहा गया है। वेदों में जल की महिमा का विशेष वर्णन है। निघण्टु में जल के १०१ नाम दिये गए हैं। इसे घृत, मधु, क्षीरम्, रेतः, जन्म (जीवन), अक्षरम्, तृप्तिः, रस:, पय:, भेषजम्, ओजः, क्षत्रम्, अन्नम्, हविः, अमृतम्, तेजः, जलाषम् आदि नामों से भी पुकारा गया है(निघण्टु - उदकनामानि १.१२)। अथर्ववेद में इसे वैद्यों में सर्वोत्तम वैद्य बताया गया है(आपः ... भिषजां सुभिषक्तमाः। अ. ६.२४.२ भिषग्भ्यो भिषग्तरा आपः । अ. १९.२.३) । जल को सब रोगों का औषध बताया गया है। यह रोगों को दूर करने वाला है। इससे वंशानुगत रोग भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं(आप इद् वा उ भेषजी आप अमीवचातनीः। आयो विश्वस्य भेषजीस् तास् त्वा मुञ्चन्तु क्षेत्रियात्।। अ. ३७५॥ ४. अ. ६.२४.११ ५. अ. १.४.४)। जलों से प्रार्थना की गई है कि वे दिव्य जल मुझे हृदयदाह का निवारण करने वाला औषध प्रदान करें(अ. ६.२४.११)।
जलों में अमृत का वास है। उनमें रोगनिवारक शक्ति है। जलों का श्रद्धापूर्वक सेवन करने से पुरुष अश्वों के समान बलवान् और स्त्रियों गौओं के समान बच्चों को दूध पिलाने वाली अर्थात् वन्ध्यात्व से मुक्त होकर सन्तान उत्पन्न करने वाली हो जाती हैं(अ.१.४.४)। जल संजीवनी हैं। उनमें जीवन प्रदान करने की शक्ति है। चाहे मनुष्य हों, चाहे पशु-पक्षी हों और चाहे पेड़-पौधे, जल सबको जीवन प्रदान करते हैं(अ- १.५.३)। इसलिये उनसे बार-बार जीवन प्रदान करने की प्रार्थना की गई है। जल मनुष्यों की अनेक आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति करते हैं। जल के बिना मनुष्य का जीवन चल नहीं सकता। जल रोगनिवारक औषध का काम भी करते हैं। उनसे अनेक रोग दूर हो जाते है इसलिये वे वरणीय सुखों के स्वामी हैं(ईशान वार्याणां क्षयन्तीश् चर्षणीनाम् । अपो याचामि भेषजम् ॥ अ. १.५.४)।
सोम ओषधियों का राजा है। जिस प्रकार सोम उत्तम औषधि है और उसमें रोग निवारण के सब गुण हैं, उसी प्रकार जलों में भी रोगनिवारक शक्तियाँ हैं(अप्सु मे सोम अब्रवीद अन्तर विश्वानि भेषजा अ. १.६.२)। एक अन्य मन्त्र में जलों की स्तुति करते हुए उनसे प्रार्थना की गई है कि हे जलों- तुम औषध के गुणों वाले हो तुम मेरे शरीर की रक्षा करने वाले हो तुम अपने औषधीय गुणों से मेरे शरीर को भर दो, ताकि मैं स्वस्थ, सुखी जीवन जीता हुआ सौ वर्षों तक सूर्य के दर्शन करता रहूँ(आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम । ज्योक् च सूर्यं दृशे ॥ अ. १.६.३) ।) अथर्ववेद के ऋषियों की जलों के प्रति श्रद्धा और आदरभाव देखते ही बनता है। वे उनके गुणों और महिमा का गान करते हुए थकते नहीं। एक मन्त्र में कहा है कि मरुभूमि में मिलने वाले जल हमें सुखकर होवें, अनूपों के जल हमें सुखकर हों, कूप आदि खोदकर निकाले हुए जल हमें सुखकर हों, घड़ों में भरकर लाए गए जल हमारे लिये सुखकर हों और वर्षा के द्वारा बरसाए हुए जल हमें सुख देने वाले हों(शं न आपो धन्वन्याः शम् उ सन्त्वनूप्याः । शं नः खनित्रिमा आपः शम् उ याः कुम्भ आभृताः शिवा नः सन्तु वार्षिकीः । अ. १.६.४)। एक अन्य मन्त्र में जल की महिमा का इस प्रकार वर्णन किया गया है। जल तो पूर्वकाल से ही दिव्य ओषधियाँ हैं। वे पाप से प्राप्त होने वाले यक्ष्मारोग को रोगी के प्रत्येक अंग से निकालकर बाहर कर देते हैं(आपो अग्रं दिव्या ओषधयः । तास् ते यक्ष्मम् एनस्यम् अङ्गादङ्गाद् अनीनशन्॥ अ. ८.७.३)। जल कल्याण करने वाले हैं। जल रोगों को दूर करने वाले हैं। हे देवो वैद्यों की तरह रोगों को दूर करने वाले इन जलों को तुम हमें प्रदान करते रहो(ता अपः शिवा अपो ऽयक्ष्मकरणीर् अपः । यथैव तृप्यते मयस् तास् त आ दत्त भेषजीः ॥ अ. १९.२.५)।
Hydrotherapy
Water also has special importance in our lives. Life is not possible without it. Water has been called life. There is a special description of the glory of water in the Vedas. 101 names of water have been given in Nighantu. It has also been called by the names Ghrit, Madhu, Kshiram, Retah, Janma (life), Aksharam, Triptih, Rasah, Payah, Bheshajam, Ojah, Kshatram, Annam, Havih, Amritam, Tejah, Jalasham etc. (Nighantu - Udaknamani 1.12). In the Atharvaveda, he has been described as the best physician among the physicians (Aapah ... Bhishjaan Subhishaktamaah. A. 6.24.2 Bhishagbhyo Bhishagtra Aapah. A. 19.2.3). Water has been said to be a medicine for all diseases. It is going to cure diseases. Hereditary diseases are also destroyed by this (अप इद्वा उम्भेषजी आप अमीवचातनीः. आयो विश्वस्य भेशजीस् तास्त्वा मुन्चन्तु क्षेत्रियत्। A. 375॥ 4. A. 6.24.11 5. A. 1.4.4). A prayer has been made to the waters that those divine waters may provide me with the medicine that cures heartburn (A. 6.24.11).
Amrit resides in the waters. They have healing power. By consuming water with devotion, men become as strong as horses and women become as strong as cows, that is, they become free from infertility and give birth to children (A.1.4.4). Water is lifesaver. They have the power to give life. Be it humans, animals, birds or plants, water provides life to everyone (A- 1.5.3). That is why he has been repeatedly requested to grant life. Water fulfills many needs of humans. Human life cannot survive without water. Water also works as a preventive medicine. Many diseases are cured by them, that is why they are the masters of various pleasures (Ishaan Varyanam Kshayantis Charshaninaam. Apo Yachaami Bheshajam ll. A. 1.5.4).
Soma is the king of medicines. Just as Soma is the best medicine and has all the properties to cure diseases, in the same way, water also has the healing powers (Apsu Me Som Abraveed Antar Vishwani Bheshaja A. 1.6.2). In another mantra, while praising the waters, a prayer has been made to them that O Waters, you have medicinal properties, you are the one who protects my body, fill my body with your medicinal properties, so that I can live a healthy and happy life. I wish to continue seeing the Sun for a hundred years (Aapah Prinita Bheshajan Varutham Tanve Mam. Jyok Cha Suryam Drishe ll A. 1.6.3).) One can easily see the reverence and respect that the sages of the Atharva Veda have for the waters. They never get tired of singing his praises and glory. It is said in a mantra that the waters found in the desert should be pleasant to us, the waters of unique places should be pleasant to us, the waters taken out by digging wells etc. should be pleasant to us, the waters brought in pitchers should be pleasant to us and the waters showered by rain should be pleasant to us. They should be the ones that give happiness (Sham Na Apo Dhanvanyah Sham U Santvanupyaah. Sham Nah Khanitrima Aapah Sham U Yaah Kumbh Aabhritaah Shiva Nah Santu Annupyah. A. 1.6.4). In another mantra the glory of water has been described in this way. Water has been a divine medicine since ancient times. They remove the tuberculosis acquired from sin from every organ of the patient (Apo agaram divya oshadhaya. Taaste yakshmam ensyam angadangad aneenashan. A. 8.7.3). Water is beneficial. Water is going to cure diseases. Oh Gods, like physicians, you keep providing us with these waters that cure diseases (Ta Apah Shiva Apo ऽयक्ष्मकारनीर अपः यथायव त्रप्यते मयस्तास् त आ दत्त भेषजीः ॥ A. 19.2.5).
